Anger Management Classes Don’t Work….

…If you don’t WORK them!

I just read this article  about a Police Officer in Lake Wales, Florida who has been charged with battery for biting the nose of a high school football player while he was coaching a high school football team and was also demoted after he “exploded in rage” in a meeting with the city’s police chief.  Apparently, the officer had taken a one-day anger management class through pre-trial diversion and has been ‘recommended’ to attend another anger management class to keep his police certification.

This article was of particular interest to me for two reasons 1) The city that this occurred in is extremely close to my home town, in fact you would more than likely call us ‘cross town rivals’ and 2) It brings home the issue of whether or not anger management classes, courses, or counseling actually work.

[picapp align=”center” wrap=”false” link=”term=bored&iid=249626″ src=”0246/638347b7-45d5-4a26-915e-a77c97a1afc3.jpg?adImageId=12969641&imageId=249626″ width=”380″ height=”257″ /]

We’ve seen in the media time and time again where actors, actresses, musicians, models, athletes and countless other infamous individuals have been mandated to anger management counseling for their behavior. And time and time again, after they’ve completed the class, the same individuals are seen or heard exhibiting the same aggressive behavior as before. Then the sentiment is usually…”Well, I thought they took anger management…” or the like.

To bring the point closer to home, I’ve taught individuals who were not celebrities of any kind, just your average Joe, who had also been mandated to attend a class. Many participants will attend the class which normally last around 8 – 12 weeks but they will sit with their heads against the wall and look right through the instructor the entire time (which is usually between 1 – 2 hours). They will get with their certificate, take it to the powers that be and say, “See, I took your class…now can I move on?”

With all of that noted, it’s safe to say that anger management doesn’t work…if you don’t want it to! In the case that I mentioned above the officer took a ONE DAY anger management class and that was acceptable to his authorities. Honestly, the problem here isn’t that officer took a one day class but that fact that he was ALLOWED to take a one day class. Listen, I’ve taken trigonometry, analytical geometry, pre-calculus and calculus… I was in each class for a semester of school (2 -3 days week for 15 weeks)…ask me what I learned??? I have absolutely no idea and honestly don’t care to remember. I took those classes because I HAD to in order to graduate. If I didn’t have to, I would have never volunteered my time to learning about the joys of calculus…unless I really wanted to get better at it.

Anytime someone is mandated to complete an anger management class and they don’t voluntarily admit to having an issue with misused and misplaced anger then no, it’s probably not going to work. But I will say that in the past I have had quite a few individuals who were mandated to actually report that they were glad to have taken the class and actually implemented the ideas and skills they learned in their lives. That was because they DECIDED they wanted change.

Improving your anger management skill set is  beneficial to anybody no matter what your skill level is… we all get annoyed or frustrated about something at some point and we can all probably raise our hand and say we wished we could have done or said something differently in our anger. In my practice now, my main clientele are those who are coming in voluntarily and  are highly motivated to make some changes in how they experience and express their anger and frustration.  The key isn’t so much the class, it’s the motivation behind those who are in it. For those that want to improve and change their lives…the sessions work and the changes stick… For those that want to “get it over with” to “move on” (as I’ve often heard said) then the sessions probably won’t work and not many changes will be made until they make a decision to do so.

So the next time you hear about some high-profile (or low profile in this case) figure being mandated for anger management, don’t look for much to change unless they are motivated to do so.

Just my two cents!
